This beer was inspired by the series of Pliny beers (currently Elder and Younger) from Russian River Brewing and Vinnie Cilurzo. Vinnie was
a fantastic host to the club during our break neck race to a few breweries during the Anchor Weekend.
Jonny Lieberman really fell in love with the Pliny the Younger and wanted to replicate the general concept, so he started emailing Vinnie and asking questions and generally being a homebrewing pest.
Vinnie graciously offered advice and tips on how he brews the Pliny beers. Out of those discussions, Jonny got fired up to try a Pliny the Younger clone on the new shop system. Unfortunately, the mean
old President of the club forced a change of plans and thus was born this beer in tribute to Vinnie (and ready for the drinking at Temecula), Pliny the Toddler XPA.
The basic concept of an XPA is a beer that relatively has all the hop wallop of an IPA or Double IPA, but with a gravity more conducive to session drinking. Here we have
a modest beer of 1.055 OG (13.6 Plato), which under normal circumstances will yield a beer of around 5.5%ABV.
The typical crystal malts of an American Pale or IPA are stripped
away to allow the hops to really shine through. Marris Otter is used in large portion to provide a good malt backbone to the brew and the Cara-Pils serves to keep the body alive
in the face of a withering lupulin blitz.
Also note this is the first time the Falcons attempted a full barrel on the new Falcons Pilot Brewery Mk. II. Over 70lbs of grain is no small task to handle. Adding complications to the overall
day and session is the fact that this brew day happened the same day as the Maltose Falcons' April Membership Meeting. Confused Falcons everywhere were heard to ask, "Do I brew? Do I drink? Help!"
Congratulations and Happy Birthday to Co-Brewmaster Nicky Salerno!
