January Minutes

BY Douglas King

(Published in the Febrewary 1997 Brews and News)

The January meeting took place at the Home Wine and Beer Shop on the 5th. Attendance was good at around 55, by my official guesstimate. We started the activities with the group homebrew tasting session, which was very well attended and offered many great brews! This month's participants: Doug King, Dougweiser, blonde ale, American pale ale; Jim Moorman, stout; Rich Schmittdiel, holiday spiced ale; Bill Ames, dark ale; Bruce Wenzel, blonde ale; Brian Vessa\Bruce Brode, cream ale, steam porter; Tom Wolf, American lager; Kurt & Lynn Sturgis, summer stout, cherry stout; Rick Burnside, oatmeal stout; Dean Lynn, raspberry ale.

Brian got the business of the meeting under way after the tasting with a few announcements. The club now has a new paraphernalia cabinet, which eases the storage job for the treasurer greatly. The contents of the old cabinet were either stored elsewhere, or disposed of. The new cabinet will be kept locked, so it will not be a catch-all for junk anymore. The new commerative (1996 club of the year) t-shirts were available. The commerative glassware had not arrived as of meeting time. Mark had a list of unclaimed merchandise that needs to be picked up. The annual holiday tasting at the Stuffed Sandwich in December went very smoothly. MB Raines' All Womens club brew happened the day before the meeting. The "Grain Goddesses" included Karen Barela, president of the AHA, and around 8 lady Falcons. They brewed 30 gallons of porter, named "Exxtasy Ale" and the activities were video taped by CNN. Upcoming shop brews are to include Peter Sheppard, bitter, on Jan 11th, Brian Vessa, presidential porter on Jan 18th, an the 25th anniversary barley wine project on Feb 22nd. There were no entries for Hail to Ale. Tom Wolf won the Belgian Blockbuster AHA Club Only Competition!! Tom was selected to represent our club with his Saison style ale, which competed against the best from 57 other clubs. Way to go Tom!! I hope we can get Tom to do this brew on the shop system so we can all try some! There will be a tour of Anheuser-Busch in May. We will be sampling 6 or 8 of A-B's newest products at the March meeting. These beers will be provided by George Reich, and he's anxious for us to review them and give him some feedback. The same beers may also be part of the monthly distributed tastings. The AHA officially recognized the Falcons being selected California Club of the Year with a personal letter of congratulation. It will be framed and hung in the club room. Gary Rich was given his certificate of appreciation for his service on the last Board of Directors. Ken Fay was thanked for his continuing efforts to sign up new members. Th club will comp him a year's membership in appreciation. Thanks Ken! New membership cards are in the works, they should be arriving soon. A bulk mailing of the competition package for Mayfaire will happen late in January. MB will lead another yeast class on January 25th.

The majority of the business focused on the upcoming Anchor trip. David Janss had all the info on hotels, airlines, and the bus trip available. There were a bunch of sign-up sheets going around. The bus trip will be $65, and might be the same driver as last time. The hotel this time will be the Travel Lodge, prices available when resos are made. There are many $58 roundtrip airfares available from different airlines. Jack's will make their upstairs area available for a party after Anchor, at midnight. There will be a discount also. It will be kind of close to the Anchor tip when you read this, but if you need any last minute info, call David Janss at 818-881-1738.

After the business concluded, we broke for lunch. Burgermeister Gary had tri-tip this month. There were no troubleshooters brews this month. I did a little demo of cereal mashing during lunch, with a handout detailing how I make Dougweiser. After lunch, G.H. Bruce presented the style of the month beers for tasting. There were 4 porters this month, including Sam Smith Taddy Porter, Saku Estonian Porter, Anchor Porter, and Sierra Nevada Porter.

Hope to see you all at Anchor on Feb. 8th!!

Doug

Minutes of the January Board Meeting

The Board met before the regular meeting in order to get all the details of the upcoming Anchor trip wrapped up. There were 7 members present for the meeting. We discussed when to have the tastings of the A-B products, and how to present the tasting so that it will provide meaningful feedback to A-B. We decided to do the tastings in March. There will not be a February meeting. David Janss has most of the Anchor trip details ready for the meeting, including hotels, airlines, and the bus trip. He wll have a handout at the meeting. Dave Stark will be bulk mailing the Mayfaire competition package late in January. The club now has a new competition organizing software program, which Dave will be checking out for use during the Mayfaire comp. Mark will be updating the club's display case at the shop soon. Cash was allocated up front to pay for the bus drivers room and tip. Todd will be sending Sam and Marlene a letter of thanks for the holiday tasting. Bill is going to be getting membership cards ready soon. Bll will be including an introductory letter with new member's first newsletter. Bill wants the club to recognize Key Fay for his efforts to sign up new members. Gary will be doing tri-tip for the meeting. Bruce has the barley wine project scheduled for Feb. 22 at the shop.
