Oktoberfest 1996 by Biff Tate (Published in the October 1996 Brews and News) The Octoberfest is here and so is the homebrewed beer. Hopefully, you will be able to attend and join in on the major fall party the club puts on every year. Here's are the details. The Fest will be on Saturday, October 5th at 1:00 pm. Our site is the infamous Barbara Antler residence. Please see the map for directions. The main focus areas are Brewing, Beer and Food. The Octoberfest Competition award winners will be recognized, the Homebrewer of the year will be announced, and the board of directors will perform the ritual changing of the guard. We'll have close to 40 gallons of donated local micro suds thanks to David Janss enthusiastic efforts and a wide variety of Falconian brewed barley delights of many varieties. Hey, this is a great chance contribute to the club and get feedback on your beers so bring a keg or even a bottle or two of your efforts. The menu will be authentic to the beer gardens of Southern Germany and prepared by our new Burgermeister, Gary Smith. We're having soft pretzels, grilled baby back pork ribs, potato salad, garden salad, possibly some pot luck dishes from members, and for desert...well, that leads to the next subject. The bakes sale will supply you with home made cookies and cakes made by our members. If you are so kind as to bring a desert for the bake sale your next brew will probably be a ribbon winner Its bound to happen because of your extreme kindness and dedication to the Falcons. Don't you think? Here's an opportunity to do one of those random acts of kindness all those bumper stickers have been telling us about. Some people have signed up to bake but we can never have enough. So, help out if you can. The afternoon will be backed up by German Folk music and hopefully dancing if someone knows how. And of course the Maltose Falcons Blues Band will be performing their "Auditory Homebrew" for your listening and dancing pleasure. A good way for strong, homebrew drinking, competitive Falcons to burn off some of those complex carbohydrates and win a prize of infinitely indefinite value is the Keg Toss event. The Scottish Highland Games (the Germans probably do something like it) event is always a Beer Powered game where the water filled half-barrel is thrown as far as possible. She or he who hurls the farthest, wins. The basic style is to hoist the keg to chest level and with a small running start, push the beast with extreme velocity, kind of like a vertical bench press, hurling it distances that will amaze. We may use a 5 gallon corny for hernia prevention. Anyway, its a good way to win a prize and blow off steam. All members welcome one and all, big and small. A raffle will be held and donations for it are very welcome. If you have anything to offer, bring it along on the 5th and help the club. Ribbons, food, music, and some of the best homebrew in the world. Bottom Line...be there and share in the fun. Cheers! Back to The Roost || Brew Recipes || Brews & News |
