September 1996 Members Minutes by Doug King (Published in the October 1996 Brews and News) The Maltose Falcons had their regular meeting at The Home Wine and Beer Shop on September 15th. The heat of summer was finally over, and we had a real nice day for the meeting. The attendance was a little higher than usual, with around 70 Falcons present for the activities. It seemed as though nearly everyone brought some beer to this meeting, there was no shortage this month! It sure seemed as though everyone was having a good time! Some stragglers were still hanging out at 7:30 when I left. Here's the list of those who brought beer, sorry if I missed anyone. Doug King-club brewed witbier, club brewed Dougweiser; Mark Swallow-porter; Bill Ames-brown ale; Ken Fay-brown ale; David Janss-Reseda lite ale; Cameron Stevning-stout; Jerry Pooler-trappist ale, Urquell ale; Corinne Pooler-cranberry apple mead; Bruce Wenzel-honey wheat ale; Kevin Baranowski-cherry wheat; Rich Schmittdiel-red ale; Michael Bowe-Amer. lager, light ale; Leo Barendse-IPA, alt; MB Raines Casselman-witbier, assorted bottles; and finally the rest of a keg of Anchor wheat. Thanks to all for participating, and keep up the good work!! After the group tasting of all the beers, the business portion of the meeting got under way with some old business. Sunfest was recapped, it was a complete success. And Three Points Ranch invited us back again! A round of applause was given to Bill Ellis, for his repair job on Barbara's gate. Last month's shop brews were completed, and should show up at Oktoberfest. The Falcons band played at Weber's Place in Reseda last month. They may have to play unplugged next time. The artwork contest for a new club logo is still open, the tentative deadline is the November meeting. Prizes were distributed to winners of this years L.A. County Fair Homebrew Competition by Greg Stark. Not every category had a sponsor for a prize, but those that did had really cool gifts. Cases and cases of beer of the same style as the category, and appropriate matching glassware. And a huge framed mirror for the club. Next year's comp might have sponsors for every category. The competition had 210 entries, and 15 Falcons got ribbons. Our own Michael Bowe got Best of Show, Congrats, Michael! New business started with Bruce announcing a mead tasting coming up on Saturday, 9\21, $3 fee to cover the cost of bread, water, and cups. The club member only Oktoberfest Competition will take place Sunday 9\22 at the Shop. The Pasadena Pub Crawl is set for 9\28, leaving from the Shop at 11 AM. Two important competitions are upcoming: The Dixie Cup and the California State Hombrew Competition. The club will be collecting entries for CSHC on Oct. 19th at the Shop, and will pay the shipping charge. The fall A-B tour is set for Oct. 24th at 2:30 PM. Contact Mark Poliner to get signed up. Upcoming club brews were announced- Bruce Brode, Weizenbock on 9\22; David Janss, Weizenbock on 10\12. Bruce and Brian are giving another BJCP exam and preparatory classes. Exam on 11\23, classes at Westwood Brewing on 10\26, 11\3, and 11\10. Best of Fest entries are due to be judged Oct. 7, at our board meeting. Biff filled everyone in on the upcoming Oktoberfest, set to include a bake sale, German style eats, German dancing music, The Falcons Brews Band, plenty of homebrew, and all the other fun stuff happening in Barbara Antler's yard on Oct. 5. There were sign up sheets for helpers with organizing, setting up, cleaning up, etc. After the business portion, we broke for lunch. Matt offered burgers, turkey burgers, and veggie burgers, plus pickles and corn and all the trimmings. While we ate, Sam Greene ran a little portable slide show, with pictures from past Falcons events. He also displayed some of his blowups which were for sale. Thanks for the slideshow, Sam. After lunch we had the monthly tasting, this month's featured style was Weizenbock. G.H. Bruce brought four great examples for our tasting enjoyment: Heineken Tarwebok, Schneider Weiss Adventinus, Erdinger Pinkantus, and Aloysius wheat bock. This final portion of the meeting was as well attended as I have seen in a long time. Around 40 Falcons had stayed through the entire meeting, with many staying much later. I think this was an especially fun event, due in part to the abundance of homebrews available for sampling. A lot more people stayed through the meeting, more stayed for lunch, and everyone seemed to be having a better time in general. A Falcons meeting IS definitely more fun when there is plenty of homebrew! I'd like to thank all participants, and encourage everyone to keep bringing those fine homebrews in to share. See ya at Oktoberfest. September 1996 Board Meeting Minutes Eleven board members met at the Home Wine and Beer Shop on Sept. 10th. This included a couple of the next board's members, in attendance to begin the hand off from this years members. The major focus of the meeting was Oktoberfest details. Biff reported that everything is pretty well set for Oktober 5th at Barbara Antler's house. We looked at the possibility of using the Woodland Hills Sportsman's Club facility in Santa Clarita for this Fest, but the dates didn't work out. We will be looking into the possibility of using it for Mayfaire next year. There were a few last details to work out for Oktoberfest, such as Porta-potties and tables and chairs. Biff has mailed the certificates of appreciation to the various recipients. Bruce is doing a shop brew Weizenbock on the 22nd, and he is doing a Weizenbock tasting for the Sept. meeting. Lambic may be the style for November or December. We may be including an interactive club brew sign-up sheet on the club's web page in the future. Rusty will be teaching a series of homebrewing classes at Bristol Farms in S. Pasadena Oct 12, 19, and 26. The three classes will focus on brewing, beer style appreciation, and bottling, respectively. The club will be doing a shipping for entries in the California State Homebrew Comp, dates to be announced. Matt will be serving burgers and corn at the Sept. meeting. Gary Smith will be doing Oktoberfest victuals, including sausages and such from Atlas Sausage Kitchen in N. Hollywood. Biff has arranged for some authentic German Oktoberfest music, courtesy of Bill Ellis. The fall A-B tour is set for Oct 24. Gary, Bill and Steve discussed the change over to the new board, regarding newsletters and memberships. Back to The Roost || Brew Recipes || Brews & News |
