August 1996 Members Minutes by Douglas King (Published in the September 1996 Brews and News) This will be minutes of the board meeting only, since Sunfest preempts an August meeting. The Sunfest was great! I really enjoyed the 3 Points Ranch location. Very comfortable surroundings, nice weather, good food, PLENTY of beer, band sounded great, an all around great weekend. Thanks to John Leslie for turning us on to this site, and thanks to the good people at 3 Points for having us. The Board had a meeting at the Shop on 8\7. There were nine in attendance. The first order of business was to taste and judge the club's five entries for the Club Only Mead Magic Competition. These were submitted by David Janss, Corinne Pooler, Bill Ellis, and Nick Franke. They were all terrific, but we could pick only one to represent the club. Congratulations to Nick for his winning Pyment. Barbara Antler's gate was fixed by Bill Ellis, at no cost to the club. Thanks, Bill. We signed some papers pertaining to the club's non-profit status. We agreed to present etched Falcons glasses to the top people at Anchor, and regular Falcon pint glasses to the remainder of the staff (50 total). Quaff, a San Diego club, is giving a BJCP exam Oct 26 at La Jolla Brewing company. Contact Dion Hollenbeck. Andrea from Sam Adams may speak at our Sept meeting. The Maltose Falcons Brews Band will appear at Weber's Place in Reseda on Tuesday, August 20th. Jonathan Rocks, a Falcon and Clan de Stein member, has been selected as a finalist in the World Homebrew Competition, sponsored by Boston Brewing Company. This gets him a trip to Boston to brew a batch of his beer. Congrats, Jonathan!! This year's Sunfest was a complete success, and I'm sure a good time was had by all. There were 48 or 49 festees at this year's bash, enough for the club's treasury to break even on the deal. Thanks to the good folks at 3 Points Ranch for hosting us and for all the help they provided. One of the hosts, Tim, even videotaped the goings-ons, and will be getting a copy to us! It's possible that we will return for next year's Sunfest. Another possibility is a return to Catalina. A Pasadena area pub crawl, Anheuser-Busch tour, and Great Western Malting Co. tour are still in the works. The treasury is doing OK. Membership is down quite a bit, due to a large number of expired memberships in July. A reminder to re-up will be published in the next newsletter. Matt will be doing burgers at the September meeting. The rest of the meeting focused on Oktoberfest plans. J. Howard Standing's place was checked out and will not be used for the Fest. The gun club in Santa Clarita is being considered, along with Barbara Antler's. Biff is sorting out the details, along with some help from next year's activities director, David Janss. Just a reminder, it's up to all of us to bring beer to meetings. I have been picking up ice prior to the meetings, to keep your brews cold. There are plenty of ice chests and tubs at the shop to put your beers in, kegs or bottles, homebrew or commercial. We've been running out of beer a lot lately. It's up to everyone, not just a few, to ensure that there's enough to go around. Remember, if you come to a meeting expecting to drink beer, you should bring some as well. By the way, this is my personal viewpoint only, not necessarily the Board's. See ya in September, Doug Back to The Roost || Brew Recipes || Brews & News |
