July 1996 Members Minutes by Douglas King (Published in the August 1996 Brews and News) The Maltose Falcons had their monthly meeting at The Home Wine and Beer Shop on July 14th. Attendance seemed to be about average, around 50-60 hungry, thirsty, noisy Falcons. The meeting was arranged a little differently than in past months, in an effort to control both the smoke from the BBQ and the overall flow of air through the clubroom. The BBQ was set up in the location once called "Casselman's Corner", near the front door. The kegged beers were set up outside the back door on the patio. It seemed to be not as smoky inside as it had been, however I'm not sure if Matt was even making very much smoke to begin with. The airflow provided by the 2 new box fans didn't seem to help much, from my position in the room, anyway. If anything, it may have just been drawing hot air into a cool room. It appeared that most people were not aware that the kegged beers were out back, behind the clubroom. Eventually, everyone got the idea, and started migrating out toward the kegs. They are being placed there in an effort to avoid a bottleneck situation, so head out back next time to look for a beer. The first order of business, the best part in this reporter's opinion, was the monthly tasting of homebrews. There weren't quite as many as there have been, but everyone enjoyed tasting the ones that were brought by: Myself, American Pale lager(Dougweiser) and Chocolate Porter; Mark Poliner, maple mead; Rich Schmittdiel, American Red ale; Bruce Wenzel, American IPA; Tom Rogers, 2 pale ales; and Tom Hamilton, clubbrewed Redtail Ale clone. Thanks to all who brought beers, and remember, you only need about a six-pack(or equivalent) of your homebrew to participate in this very popular tasting and discussion period at each meeting. The next order of business was announcements, old news, new news, etc. Upcoming Shop System brews: Doug King, Vienna lager on July 27th, Gary Rich, Belgian Abbey ale on August 10th, Bruce Brode, all wheat brew on July 20th. Bruce and Brian went to the California State Fair and judged craft beer and homebrew a few weeks ago. They met several other judges from other clubs throughout the state, and discussed scheduling competitions in a way to avoid conflicting dates. They also had the results of the homebrew competition, several Falcons were award winners, including Michael Bowe, Bruce Brode and Brian Vessa. Congratulations guys! Several attendees of the all women's brew on June 29th reported a complete success, a great time, great beer. The beer is being done with different fruits added to secondary of each batch, there will be some at Sunfest. The Master Brewers Conference was held in Irvine, several Falcons reported a good time. Jerry and Corrine Pooler brewed at the Shop a couple of weeks ago. This was part of John Daume's new program in which interested brewers can brew at the Shop, with everything being provided by John. Anyone interested should call the Shop for more info. Bill Ellis checked out the damage to Barbara Antler's gate, and reported that he will take care of fixing it for us. Thanks Bill! The Maltose Falcons Brews Band will perform at Sunfest, with guest bassist Doug Harlen sitting in for the injured Tom Rowland. The prize for the winner of the Falcon's Artwork Contest was announced, a complete set of paraphernalia with new art and $100 gift certificate from The Home Wine and Beer Shop. This seems to have caught the attention of a couple people, there were names on the sign up sheet this time. The Brewers Apprentice program will be back as The Brewers Support network. There are several willing brewers on the list so far, sign up if you can help out other brewers. A dinner to honor the Anchor Brewing Company on their 100th anniversary is being given on Sept. 7th. This is being done by homebrewers to thank Anchor for their years of supporting homebrewing. A motion was approved to have two Falcons sent to this occasion to present the club's gift of personalized glassware to the staff of Anchor. 1996 is also Anheuser-Busch's 100th anniversary. A motion was passed to have 2 commemorative plaques made and sent to George Reich at A-B Van Nuys and to A-B St. Louis. This is to show our thanks for the support they have given us through the years. Bruce is trying to coordinate a second mead tasting with the Cellarmasters. It will probably happen Sept. 21st. Tickets for Sunfest were on sale, $30 individual, $45 couples. The Pasadena Pub Crawl will take place Sept. 28th, no other details yet. Several people volunteered to help with Sunfest setup, including Biff Tate, Jerry Pooler, and myself. The fall tour of A-B is scheduled for the third week of October. A plea was made for those due, to re-up, we need the cash. The Sonoma County Harvest Fair will be the wildcard comp for Falcons brewer of the year award. The High Desert Trublemakers are having their first comp, at the Antelope Valley Fair, they asked for Falcons to help with judging. The final business before lunch was the toughest. The task? To get all positions on the ballot filled with anyone willing to run for the Board. Not an easy task! We finally juggled everything around until we had one per position. So, during lunch, votes were cast for the ten uncontested positions. Guess what! Everyone that ran was elected! Your new Board of Directors is: Brian Vessa, President; Dave Stark, Vice President; Yours Truly, Secretary; Mark Poliner, Treasurer; Todd Etzel, Public Relations; David Janss, Activities; Bill Ames, Membership; Gary Smith, Burgermeister; Bruce Brode, Grand Hydrometer; and Steve Keppler, Newsletter. Welcome to all new members! Lunch was shish-kebobs and rice, BBQ'd by Matt(not the rice, it slips through the grill too easily!!). There were 3 brews for troubleshooters, lead by Bruce. The beer ran out during lunch, an emergency beer run was made to get us through the rest of the meeting. After lunch, Bruce presented the tasting of the style of the month. His selection of Amber Lagers included Spaten Ur Marzen Oktoberfest, Hecklerbrau Fest Marzen, and Paulaner Oktoberfest. I'm pleased to be your Secretary(chief note-taker) for another year. I hope you'll all be happy with your decision to re-elect me(of course, no one else ran!). See ya at Sunfest. July 1996 Board Meeting Minutes The Board of Directors met on July 10th. Brian and Bruce reported that they went to Sacramento and judged the California State Fair Homebrew and Craftbrew Competition. They reported that there was a lot of talk concerning trying to schedule events on the California homebrew competition scene. The idea is to not have conflicting dates, so there can be more inter-club activities, judging, etc. Bill Ellis, professional gate man, will check out Barbara Antler's gate regarding some damage that may have been a result of Mayfaire. We talked about what kind of prize we can offer to entice participation in the Falcon's Artwork Contest. Possibly a complete set of paraphernalia with the selected artwork and a gift certificate from the shop. There will be a dinner honoring the Anchor Brewing Company on Sept. 7. It is being done by California homebrew clubs to thank them for their support over the years. We talked about how the Falcons can show our support. Possibly engraved, personalized Falcons glassware for the staff. We tried to figure out a spending limit. We talked about moving the Sept. general meeting, as this dinner is the day before the scheduled date of the meeting. We may send a representative of the club to present our contribution. We took an informal poll to see how much beer might show up for Sunfest. Sounds like plenty, possibly including a donation from Bob Brewer of Anchor. The Brewers Apprentice Program should be back soon. Several board members signed up to be on the list. There are still 2 open spots for the election at the July meeting. We talked a little about who might be able to fill the spots. There are quite a few upcoming events, Mark will make the announcements at the July meeting. We may have lost more of our deposit on a site at Lake Skinner than previously anticipated. Mark is checking into the problem. Biff is having certificates of appreciation made up for the many individuals who have supported the club for years. Steve Casselman is apparently working out the details to get more Maltese Falcons, the Mayfaire BOS award, made. We are currently out, and there's been a problem finding the mold. We are trying to get a rep from one of the local beer distributing companies to come and give a talk at a future meeting. Bruce is going to schedule another mead tasting, probably Sept. 21st. The Pasadena area pub crawl will be a week after the Sept. meeting. The second tour of A-B will be happening soon, the sign up sheet is almost full. Entries for Mead Magic will be due in August. During the rest of the meeting, we sorted out some of the logistics involved with setting things up at 3 Points Ranch for Sunfest. We will need some volunteers, we will be asking at the July meeting. See ya at the Sunfest, August 2nd-4th! Back to The Roost || Brew Recipes || Brews & News |
