Members Systems - Malibu Brews (Craig Shapland) |
Welcome to the brewery of Malibu Brews in Agorua Hills. Run by Craig Shapland, winner of multiple awards
for diverse beer styles including his Eisbock and Belgian Strong Ales. Craig
brews on a two tiered keg kettle HERMs with large BTU propane burners to get things really moving. Here you can see Craig set up on his patio preparing his brew
of the day.
Instead of hand grinding 38 lbs of grain, Craig powers his mill with his power drill. And yeah,
those are your typical Home Depot buckets providing storage. Use what you got and what's cheap, right?
When you get right down to it, this is when you know the brewday has really started, from this moment on, there's a clock running.
Craig sets up the HERMS to raise his beer to mashout temperatures. Generally one of the more annoying aspects of HERMS usage is
the priming of the a typical homebrewer's pump. Here you can see Craig already has the pump set and running and waiting on the mash liquor to return to the kettle.
Craig gives one last tweak and the HERMS is off and running. Mash liquor runs out
of the tun, up through a coil in the HLT and back down to the mash tun. Truly the easy way to make your mash happen.
Craig's boiler and mash tun both use the same false bottom to clean the wort up.
Almost done. Craig chills his beer with one of the new fancy Therminator chillers.
Running with this device the wort comes down to a ready to pitch 74°F, even during the height of
summer in Los Angeles.
Oh yeah, really hard work. Craig claims to be watching an airshow in this shot, but really, we all
know that brewing is hard work.
Thanks to the Therminator, Craig's capable of running the wort out of the boiler and into the
carboys at full speed.
Less than 12 hours later and the blowoff tubes are spewing yeast into the overflow tank. Remember the power of good
yeast is the power to make good beer.
