Gaslight Gathering Steampunk Convention

Over the May 3-4 weekend I attended the Gaslight Gathering convention in San Diego. This is the 3rd year this convention has been held.

On Saturday I presented a beer appreciation panel. The presentation room was full and after a 5 minute talk about the history of beer, we started the sampling. The sampling list:

Hitachino Red Rice Ale
Chechvar
Weihenstephan Hefe-Weiss
Baltika Porter
Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale
Guinness
Chimay Blue
Leffe Brown
Petrus Aged Red
Delirium Tremens

Basically it was a world tour of beers.

Where The F**k Should I Go For Drinks? Finds Booze For You

If you happen to find yourself in need of an after work pick me up or just need to drown your sorrows, we’ve found a pretty neat website for you that’s basically the drunk version of Yelp.

Created by UK creative consultancy, Coolography, ”WHERE THE FUCK SHOULD I GO FOR DRINKS” gets straight to the point. This bleep-tastic website starts out by asking for your location and spits out a random business close by that you should “fucking go to”

This Ingenious Cap Transforms Your Growler Into A Mini Keg

If you’ve ever owned a growler, you know that its one downfall is that the beer immediately starts to degrade once you open it. So, if you’re a craft drinker who likes to get the most out of your brew (so, everyone), check out The TapIt Cap. This ingenious accessory easily transforms your growler into a mini keg by making sure it stays fresh and carbonated. Because there is nothing worse than flat beer, nothing.

It's the End of the World

Enjoyed a wonderful Stone IPA.  Called Enjoy by 12/21/12.

Not very bitter, it has a rich malt profile with an intense hop aroma and flavor.

Oktoberfest 2012 What a Party

Another great Falcon's party into the history books.  There was great beer, great music and great friends.

I have had many a request for the mac&cheese recipe.  Here it is:

Mac & Cheese

2 tbs butter

2 tbs flour

2 cup heavy cream

1 tsp Coleman’s dry mustard or 2 tsp Sierra Nevada mustard

1 or 2 bay leaf

salt & pepper

hot sauce (Tabasco, Frank’s, etc), to taste

GoPlate Lets You Hold a Party in the Palm of Your Hand, Literally

Here’s a familiar summertime scenario: after waiting a hot second in the buffet line, you’ve finally gotten your food and your drink and are ready to get your grub on when you realize there are no empty tables around. You could try to find a ledge somewhere, or maybe sit on the floor, but heavens, you’re not an animal.

Brew Brothers Brewpub, Reno

Nestled in the El Dorado Casino is the Brew Brothers Brewery. They tag themselves as the "best brewpub" in America. While their aspiration are bold, the reality is a little more middle of the road.

Atmosphere was pleasant with but reminded me of a TGIFriday or a Chili's. Brew Brothers offers live entertainment. Lighting was muted, which helped create a comfortable ambience amidst the dark wood and leather interior. As with most brewpubs, the brew kettles and conditioning tanks were present behind glass windows at the entrance to the pub.

Oregon home brewers, winemakers can compete again: House gives final OK

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2011/03/oregon_house_gives_...

SALEM -- Cheers. Home brewers and amateur winemakers should be able to partake once again in friendly tastings and contests under a bill that cleared its final legislative hurdle Wednesday.

The Oregon House unanimously endorsed Senate Bill 444, which rewrites state law to clearly allow homemade beer and wine to be made, transported and consumed.

Sierra Nevada Taproom

As ubiquitious as the brewery is to our club, few Falcons have traveled to this Sacred Brewery.  Ken Grossman, the founder of SN is a long time Falcon.  Fortune was shining on me as my boss had me on a trip through Northern California.   A stop at the brewery's taproom (restaurant) was demanded.

Stateline Brewery and Grill

I went here during a business trip with my boss. If you come the wrong way on the road, you can easily miss the sign! The place is tucked into a tourist mall at the base of the mountain gondola and near the Nevada casinos, but the atmosphere is not touristy at all.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Next week I'll be in the Tahoe/Reno area.  I'm trying to decide between the Stateline Brewery/REstaurant and the Silverpeak Brewery/REstaurant.   Does anybody have an opinion?

Blue Frog Grog & Grill

I find myself in Solano county wanting dinner.  I just came back from touring the Jelly Belly factory (what fun) and was looking for  libation during the Lakers (Flakers) game.  Accross the street from my hotel was a local brewpub called the Blue Frog.   Why "the Blue Frog"? Apparently the founders/owners have been singing the Peter, Paul & Mary song since they were first married.

Schooner or Later -- Restaurant in Long Beach

I saw this featured on "Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives" on Food Network.  The restaurant is located at the marina in Long Beach.  As its name suggests, it features beverages in 'schooner' glasses.  While the bar is a prominent feature, the food here is very good!

Mild Makes a Comeback in England

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Mild beer, last in fashion when the Beatles were still at school, is making a comeback in Britain, according to a real ale lobby group.Responding to a growing number of requests from beer buffs, breweries are beginning to produce more Mild and pubs are finding demand for the dark, malty ale is rising.

In a survey of 500 real ale drinkers across the UK, the group found that 64 percent of them had seen an increase in the number of Mild beers served at pubs and beer festivals over the past 5 years.
